WHEREAS, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is America’s largest Muslim civil rights and
advocacy organization with thirty-five offices across the country, including the Florida chapter; and
WHEREAS, CAIR’s vision is to promote justice and mutual understanding through its mission of enhancing
understanding of Islam, promoting justice and empowering American Muslims; and
WHEREAS, CAIR supports free enterprise, freedom of religion and expression and is committed to protecting
the civil rights of all American citizens, regardless of faith; and
WHEREAS, CAIR supports domestic policies that promote civil rights, diversity and freedom of religion and
opposes any policies that limit these rights, permit racial, ethnic or religious profiling, infringe on due process, or prevent
Muslims and others from participating fully in American civic live; and
WHEREAS, CAIR is a natural ally of groups, religious or secular, that advocate justice and human rights in
America and around the world, support foreign policies that help create free and equitable trade, encourage human rights and
promote representative government based on socio-economic justice. These groups include the American Civil Liberties
Union, Amnesty International, NAACP, Hispanic Unity, Organization of Chinese Americans, Japanese American Citizens
League, Sikh Mediawatch and Resource Task Force, among many others; and
WHEREAS, CAIR condemns all acts of violence against civilians by any individual, group or state and advocates
dialogue between faith communities both in America and worldwide. CAIR coordinated the release of a fatwa (religious
pronouncement) that stated in part, “Islam strictly condemns religious extremism and the use of violence against innocent lives.
There is no justification in Islam for extremism or terrorism. Targeting civilians’ life and property through suicide bombings or
any other method of attack is haram or forbidden – and those who commit these barbaric acts are criminals, not martyrs.”; and
WHEREAS, the City of Tampa is pleased to acknowledge the many contributions CAIR makes to our community
and extends best wishes to the members on the occasion of their 2008 Annual Tampa Banquet, appropriately themed
“American Muslims: Defining Ourselves.”
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Pam Iorio, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Tampa,
Florida, do hereby proclaim November 15, 2008 as
“COUNCIL ON AMERICAN-ISLAMIC RELATIONS (CAIR) DAY”
in the City of Tampa, Florida, and urge all citizens to join me in acknowledging and urge all citizens to join me in acknowledging and thanking the members of this organization
for their continued efforts on behalf of our residents and our community.
